Black tea from China, with bergamot and centaury. In 1833, Earl Grey, the Earl of Howick Hall, then British Prime Minister, suspended the East India Company's price monopoly on the tea trade with China. The tea originally pure Chinese tea was lightly floured with bergamot oil. This citrus plant, supplied by the Chinese, was intended to protect the tea from the moldy taste and tar that could arise from the long sea voyage to real England. Thus, this tea received its name, and even today, Earl Grey is the personification of better English tea.
